Before bump becomes babe: maternity photographs at Poldhu Beach

Bare feet, salt air and the beautiful, fleeting shape of motherhood.

Annie joined this expectant mother at Poldhu Beach on the evening of 1 October. The last of the light softened everything, the sand still held a little warmth from summer, and the wind whipped up waves behind her.

As they walked, they talked about one of the surprises still to come: would this little person be a boy or a girl? A whole life already loved, with so much still waiting to be discovered.

A little space before everything changes

Pregnancy brings phenomenal changes to a woman’s body. While you’re living through them, they can feel all-consuming. Afterwards, the shape of your bump and the feeling of carrying your baby can become surprisingly distant memories.

A maternity session makes a little room to remember this part, too. A pause to recognise what your body is doing and the person you are becoming, before your baby arrives.

At Poldhu, the moving sea and soft evening light became part of that story. There was something beautiful about the strength of the waves alongside the quiet anticipation of these final weeks.

Feeling comfortable in front of the camera

You don’t need to arrive feeling confident about being photographed.

Before the session, Annie talked through location ideas with this mother and brought a selection of soft, draping fabrics from the maternity wardrobe. Those conversations and small preparations help make the experience feel more familiar before the first photograph is taken.

On the beach, there was time to walk, talk and settle into being there. Space to feel comfortable, with gentle guidance along the way.

“I booked a maternity photo shoot with Annie, I was quite apprehensive as being in front of the camera isn’t my favourite place to be, but Annie made the whole photoshoot such a beautiful and empowering experience! She talked through location ideas with me beforehand and had the loveliest maternity wardrobe on hand of soft, drapey fabrics that worked so well with a bump. Thank you Annie for helping me feel confident and strong as we captured this little moment in time before bump becomes babe! Highly recommend Annie for the way she made me feel incredible and for the most dreamy collection of maternity photos.”

Already held, already loved

Before you meet your baby, there is already a relationship growing.

You have carried them, nurtured them and imagined the moment you’ll finally see their face. These photographs hold a little of that anticipation: a mother and her baby, together before their first hello.

A maternity shoot that will stay with Annie, and a little bit of magic on the Cornish coast.
