Some families plan their photographs months in advance. For this family, it began as a spur-of-the-moment idea while they were visiting Cornwall from the United States.
They were staying in Falmouth and wondered if they might fit in a family photoshoot before going home. We were able to make space for them on their final evening and met for a walk between Grebe Beach and Durgan, on the Helford River.
The heat of the day had passed. We wandered along the shoreline, put our feet in the sea and shared stories as the evening unfolded. What began as a last-minute plan became one of the highlights of their trip.
Family photographs while visiting Cornwall
A family holiday creates something everyday life rarely offers: time together, away from the usual routines, in a place that becomes part of the memory.
For families travelling to Cornwall—from elsewhere in the UK or from overseas—a photoshoot can be more than a record of where you visited. It can preserve how that particular chapter felt: the freedom of the children by the water, the people who made the journey and the small interactions that might otherwise pass unnoticed.
You do not need to know Cornwall well or arrive with a location in mind. We can recommend somewhere that suits your family, where you are staying and the kind of experience you want to have. For visitors based around Falmouth, the Helford’s beaches, woodland and quiet shoreline offer a beautiful range of possibilities without needing to turn the day into a formal production.
For American families searching for a vacation photographer in Cornwall, we offer the same thoughtfully planned, gently guided Family Story—shaped around the time you have here.
Joy and grief, held together
These photographs carried particular meaning for the family. It was their first holiday after the loss of significant loved ones, and the experience held both the joy of being together and the absence of people they deeply missed.
We did not need to manufacture that meaning or ask the family to perform it. It was already present in the stories they shared and in the ways they cared for one another.
At one point, Emma’s husband reached out and took his mother-in-law’s hand as they walked. It was a small, quiet gesture, but one that stayed with us. For a moment, it showed how this family carries one another through change.
Family photographs do not have to tell only one emotional story. Happiness and sadness can sit beside each other. A photograph can be full of life while also holding the memory of someone who is not there.
An evening between Grebe and Durgan
Grebe Beach gave the children room to explore while the walk towards Durgan created a natural rhythm for the session. There was no need to stand still for long or repeatedly pose for the camera. We could keep moving, talking and watching for the moments that mattered.
Towards the end of the evening, storm clouds gathered over the sea and rolled towards the Helford. Just as we finished, thunder began to rumble and the first crack of lightning lit the sky.
It felt like a fitting end to their last evening in Cornwall: beautiful, changeable and impossible to entirely plan.
Their words
“We had the pleasure of working with Annie and Dan while on holiday in Falmouth. It was a spur of the moment idea to get some family photographs and Annie and Dan were so kind to fit us in without much notice.
These photographs were bittersweet as they represent our first holiday without some significant loved ones we recently lost, and they did such a beautiful job capturing joy and grief coexisting and the little ways we choose to honor our loved ones.
On a lighter note, they are both so down to earth and fun to work with. You feel like you’re meeting up with old friends. Thank you again, we will cherish these photos for years to come xx”

The family later described the photoshoot as one of the highlights of their entire trip. That matters to us. The photographs should be meaningful, but the time spent making them should feel good too—more like meeting up with old friends than performing for a camera.
